Hello home based business owners in Costa Mesa! Today’s blog is about saving money with home business tax write-offs. If you are running your own direct sales business or online store out of your Costa Mesa home, you can take advantage of several tax breaks.

A percentage of your rent or mortgage and utilities can be deducted. If you use your computer exclusively for running your business, you may be able to write off the entire purchase price. Don’t forget to include the monthly fee to your internet service provider (I put this expense under the utilities category mentioned previously.)

Gasoline and auto maintenance expenses can take a large chunk of your income, especially as Costa Mesa gas prices continue to rise. Don’t forget to expense the business portion of your transportation costs.

You can’t write off 100 percent of business meals eaten in Midway City restaurants, but you may be able to expense 50 percent. If your kids are tired of eating the same lunch every day, then today’s Midway City kid’s health blog is for you!

Instead of the old standby PB and J, put a couple of tablespoons of peanut butter in a plastic container. Then give your child healthy things to dip into it, like whole wheat crackers, celery, or apple slices.

Bento boxes are a fun way to to pack a creative and eye-catching lunch. Originating in Japan, bento boxes have small compartments to separate elements of a meal and can be found at many Irvine and Yorba Linda area stores. They’re great for child-sized portions of food, and for kids who hate the idea of one food touching another food.

Finger foods are a fun lunch for children, and it’s easy to keep them nutritious.

Low-fat cheese cubes, fruit slices, and veggie sticks can add up to a filling meal for kids with all the vitamins and minerals they need. Sandwiches are a lunch time staple for kids, but you can try mixing up the starch. Instead of bread, try a whole-grain wrap or a whole-wheat pita.

AAP Immunization Information For Irvine Parents In the past century, the rates of many serious diseases in the United States have significantly declined, in some cases, they have been virtually eradicated.

Many Irvine people have never met a person with measles, polio, small pox, rubella, tetanus, or diphtheria; though these diseases killed thousands of California children in past generations.

One of the main reasons many dangerous communicable childhood diseases have been minimized in our area is due to Midway City children’s immunizations. The increase in immunization use has gone a long way to improve health in our California communities.

Recently, I have noticed that many Irvine parents are questioning the children’s immunization schedule. I came across an informative American Academy of Pediatrics FAQ sheet that addresses most of the common concerns.

Most Santa Ana parents know about the health benefits of gardening as a family: spending time outdoors, working together, establishing a connection to the food we eat, better nutrition, and many more.

Something not so well known in Santa Ana is that the dirt itself contains beneficial bacteria that can aid in depression, cognitive functioning, and even in fighting some cancers.

Working with soil in Santa Ana – digging, pulling weeds, harvesting vegetables – exposes California kids and parents to a strain of bacteria called mycobacterium vaccae. Recent research reveals that m. vaccae triggers the release of seratonin, which can elevate mood and reduce stress.

In one study, two groups of mice were fed peanut butter sandwiches before finding their way through a difficult maze. One of the groups had m. vaccae spread on the sandwiches. The mice that ingested the bacteria ran the maze twice as fast and exhibited half as many stress behaviors as the mice that didn’t have the bacteria.

Think of Santa Ana kids in the ‘good ole’ days,’ running around on unpaved roads, playing in meadows, forests, and dirt piles, and half of the time probably bare-foot. It is quite a different childhood than the sanitized version that exists in our society today. Children not only need more time out-of-doors, but they need to get dirty! Let your Santa Ana neighbors hear you yell: ‘Kids, go outside and get dirty!’

Dehydration Can Trigger Tantrums In Santa Ana

Most Santa Ana parents have experienced a tantrum or meltdown with their children. My kids usually lose it when they are hungry or need a nap. Some kids flip out if their routine is altered. My Midway City co-worker claims her kids get crazy when there is a full moon.

Lack of sleep and low blood sugar are the usual suspects causing irritability in my Midway City child, but a new study in the Journal of Nutrition points the finger at another culprit.1 Dehydration seems to lead to a low mood in healthy women. The study only included young women, but I did a little experiment on my own kids and noticed when they were mildly dehydrated they were fatigued and irritable.
